Should service dogs be allowed burial at national military cemeteries?
Recently, a US Army service dog that served nine tours in Afghanistan was denied burial at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.
The Veterans Administration had this to say:
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said...that federal law and regulations prohibit burying dogs in Great Lakes National Cemetery here or at any other VA cemetery.
"(He's) not eligible for burial," said Jo Schuda, a VA spokeswoman. "The VA understands how much service members love and appreciate their dog comrades. They have served their country.
"However, the law that transferred (national cemeteries) in 1973 from the Army to the VA and federal regulations do not permit animals to be buried in the cemeteries."
What do you think - Are dogs just equipment or are they also worthy of burials next to human soldiers?
